Types of intelligence: Do you have the right type for the industry you’re in?

The business world is full of fierce competition. These are the 8 types of intelligence. Do you have the right one for the industry you are in?

We have been investigating so you can stay ahead of that competition. One of these 8 types of intelligence will resonate with you, but which one?

Back in 1983, a developmental psychologist, Howard Gardener, discovered that types of intelligence could be broken down into distinct categories. Gardener named them as follows -

  • Naturalist (nature smart)
  • Logical-mathematical (number and reasoning smart)
  • Existential (life smart)
  • Linguistic (word smart)
  • Spatial (picture smart)
  • Intra-personal (self smart)
  • Interpersonal (people smart)
  • Musical (sound smart)

Which type do you think you are?

Bill Gates identified that there are multiple different types of intelligence. Then he identified himself as logical-mathematical type because he has a strong knowledge and aptitude for working with numbers and coding.

Those who possess logical-mathematical intelligence are often good at forming and proving hypotheses.

Different industries require different types of intelligence

Many of us in management roles probably got to where we are because of our interpersonal intelligence. This is the ability to interact with, and understand, others and this is essential for roles involving negotiations. Verbal and non-verbal communication also both play their parts in this type of intelligence. However, most importantly for business leaders is the ability to influence others.

Then noting distinctions among others and being sensitive to their moods and temperaments are also essential skills in reading other people. Entertaining multiple perspectives is also what top business leaders can all do extremely well.

Law and academia often require those with intra-personal intelligence, who can understand those around them.

Industries involving the environment, such as the creating of eco-friendly packaging or renewable energy, require leaders with naturalist intelligence. Also existential intelligence skills are also essential for seeing the bigger picture.
